Reducing the amount of food you eat is one of the best ways to lose weight easily, even if you make few other changes to your lifestyle. But eating less is not that easy if you are used to eating more. You may end up feeling hungry and deprived if you try to reduce your food intake too much, too fast. Here are a few tips for eating less without feeling deprived that may help you:- Slice it thinner.Do you normally take large slices of beef, pork, chicken, and turkey? If so, you can easily reduce your portion sizes by slicing it thinner. If you slice it yourself, invest in a really sharp knife so you can make very thin slices without tearing the meat. When you buy meat at the deli counter, ask them to slice it very thin. Then enjoy the normal amount of slices you would eat, but you will be eating less because the slices are half or less than half the size they used to be.- Use a smaller serving spoon.Average serving spoons can usually scoop out a 1/4 to 1/2 cup of food, which may be too much for more fattening foods. Avoid this by using a tablespoon or teaspoon to serve yourself. It may take a little practice to feel comfortable with this because you’ll be able to visibly notice that your serving size is smaller than it normally is, but over time you will get used to it.- Use a smaller plate. You can also use a smaller plate to eat your meals; a salad or dessert plate works well. This may seem like a scanty amount of food if you usually load up a full-size dinner plate, but when you consider the actual size of your stomach you’ll quickly realize that a smaller plate holds just the right amount of food to satisfy you without making you feel overly stuffed.- Use a smaller glass. If you typically drink wine, soda, or sweetened tea with your meals, try using a smaller glass so you aren’t taking in as many calories. A small juice glass holds about 4 ounces of liquid, which will add anywhere from 50 to 150 calories to your meal, depending on the beverage. Or omit this problem altogether by drinking water.- Cut down gradually. If the above tips seem difficult, try cutting down your portions more gradually. Either reduce your serving size of specific foods only, or practice leaving a few bites of each food on your plate after each meal. Just keep reminding yourself that it’s not your stomach that’s craving all of that food, it’s your mind! Over time you will find it easier to let go gradually and lose weight.
